What would you like for breakfast?
Jul. 22nd, 2009 10:43 amOne family in Kenya has breakfast with giraffes -- or the other way around. And the Carr-Hartleys are opening their family manor up as the world's only giraffe hotel. Spiffy. :-)

Speaking of breakfast...
Jul. 22nd, 2009 10:55 amWhen two red panda cubs were abandoned by their mother at the Taiyuan Zoo in northern China, they were adopted by a dog wet-nurse. Looking at the picture from Zooborns, I can't help but wonder how hefty that dog was before she started nursing.

Lou Dobbs: still an idiot
Jul. 22nd, 2009 12:23 pmDobbs continues to question the legitimacy of President Obama's birth in the U.S., possibly because Dobbs can't find Hawai'i with both hands and a boat.
Idiot.
(BTW, ignore the register-here box at MediaMatters. You can just click it off and get to content.)

Falling in love...all over again
Jul. 22nd, 2009 02:02 pmA love letter fell off a mantlepiece and was lost in the works...only to be re-discovered recently when workers were dismantling the fireplace for renovation. The discovery rekindled a relationship after 16 years...and the happy couple just got married.
What a cool story.

The most intense video you'll see today
Jul. 22nd, 2009 03:06 pmFrom CNN yesterday, this is footage shot by a hand-held of efforts to rescue a mother and her two children from a burning vehicle. Two off-duty firefighters, John and Joel Rechlitz, and an off-duty police officer, Mark Wroblewski, went to work to get the three out of their vehicle. They were helped by neighbors and passers-by.
Yes, it ends well.

I needed to pull a plot plan for our home this week, so I called the Southern Essex County Registry of Deeds. Their web site offers the chance to download a deed but I didn't see my own need addressed on the site. So, before I drove over to (and got lost in) Salem, I wanted to find out if there was also a download location for plot plans. ( What follows is an amazing story...at least, it amazed me... )

Burn the books about teh gays...
Jul. 22nd, 2009 05:31 pm...that's apparently the cry in one Wisconsin city, where books for young adults that include homosexual characters and themes are at the center of a controversy in the local library.
*barf*
The strife began in February when West Bend couple Jim and Ginny Maziarka objected to some of the content in the city library's young-adult section. They later petitioned the library board to move any sexually explicit books -- the definition of which would be debated -- from the young-adult section to the adult section and to label them as sexually explicit.Yeah, heaven forbid we should actually tell young adults that it's okay to be gay. They might fall in love with the *wrong* people, grow up and vote in favor of same-sex marriage, and then my marriage would be threatened! Oh, noooooo!
Ginny Maziarka, 49, said the books in the section of the library aimed at children aged 12 to 18 included homosexual and heterosexual content she thought was inappropriate for youths.
She and her husband also asked the library to obtain books about homosexuality that affirmed heterosexuality, such as titles written by "ex-gays," Maziarka said.
"All the books in the young-adult zone that deal with homosexuality are gay-affirming. That's not balance," she said.

It's starting to look like June
Jul. 22nd, 2009 11:38 pmEvery time I look at the National Weather Service forecast for my town, they've revised it downward for the next two days. They did that Monday, yesterday...*sigh* And now we're not supposed to top 70°F until Saturday.
Sunday+ is all supposed to be 80s, however.
I just don't think I believe that.
