This morning, I mentioned to the volunteer coordinator of the Steampunk World's Fair that the event seems to be suffering the same fate that Anime Boston faced in its first year: a lot more people showed up than they had anticipated, but that abundance of riches is not the worst problem that new convention organizers could face.

One man, overhearing the conversation, explained to me that this was the same problem the very first Star Trek convention in 1972 faced -- and, he said somewhat importantly, "I was there."

I mentioned that my friend Ben had been one of the organizers of those early conventions, smiled, and went off to my gophering gig.
