I had missed the news earlier, but apparently the UN now has a "first contact" specialist...just in case. From this month's Ansible:
Mazlan Othman, Malaysian astrophysicist and head of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, is about to take up her new role as official UN First Contact Person for any visiting aliens.
Bravo for the UN! Does the *US* have a first contact specialist? Or is that not necessary, since our government has been dealing with aliens since at least Roswell?

Note: Alas, Ansible was spoofed...and so, of course, was I. [livejournal.com profile] smofbabe has provided the link about the hoax in the comments of this post.

A green campaigning group, 10:10, posted an ad/short film "encouraging" people to take part in their ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions. After quite a few complaints about the gory nature of the film, it was removed from 10:10's site (and the BBC)...but it's still available on YouTube. The film starts with a bit where a teacher blows up two of her students who have elected not to take part in the campaign. More bloody explosions follow...

Of course I have it here. And I agree that it is not in good taste. (Were it less graphic, it might be funny.)
