Hey, Jack Kerouac!
Aug. 7th, 2012 11:25 pmJack Kerouac, the iconic writer of the beat generation, was a local boy. He was from Lowell, Massachusetts, and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell English Department has really adopted him as their totem animal. :-)
And, of course, the minor league baseball team Lowell Spinners also dig the city's favorite son. In 2003, the Spinners offered Jack Kerouac bobblehead dolls as promotional items at a baseball game. Mike and I had tickets, but then I ended up ill and we didn't go. At the height of their valuation, the suckers were routinely selling for $200 or more...for bobbleheads you got free for going to see minor (wicked minor) league ball.
Eventually, the prices came down, and Mike bought a Jack Kerouac bobblehead, and an original paperback edition of On the Road to rest him on.
So...several weeks ago, we had tickets to a Spinners game and invited our friend
gerisullivan to go with us. That night, it was Stephen King bobbleheads. The Spinners had done a previous edition, but this was a second image entirely, and quite nice. The three of us got to the ballpark about 1/2 an hour before the gates opened, got in line (with 150-200 people in front of us), and got our free Stephen King dolls, which look amazingly like him and grin maniacally while bobbling.
gerisullivan was so impressed with the conceit that, when we got home from the baseball game, she went to the Spinners web site and was browsing along...when she discovered another premium game would be played tonight. She smirked, bought three tickets, and we made plans.
Tonight's promotional item - another Jack Kerouac bobblehead...with bobble thumb, too. :-) We got three; one will be going to Geri's house, of course...one we will keep in the box...and the third joined the other Jack. ( And here they are... )
