Syria's regime is famously blaming "western nations" for the violence in that country, claiming that violent gangs funded by the west have been perpetrating all of the atrocities on peaceful protesters so that they can push an "Israeli agenda."
But if one story out of Syria can be confirmed, the name of Zainab al-Hosni could well become a rallying cry of the entire Syrian protest movement. CNN reports that Zainab al-Hosni is believed to have been abducted by Syrian security forces in order to force her brother, Mohammed al-Hosni - a galvanizing figure for the opposition in the Bab Alsibaa neighborhood of Mas, Syria.
Mohammed al-Hosni was wounded in a protest. When the family next saw him, the reports say, he had been tortured (cigarette burns on his face, beatings, etc.) and then shot: four times in the chest, once in the shoulder, and once through his mouth and into his head. The family went to collect his remains and were told that his sister's corpse was also in the morgue.
Zainab al-Hosni was 18 years old when she was arrested. Between the time of that arrest and when her family saw her body, she was brutally tortured, mutilated, killed, and dismembered: her arms were cut off, and she was decapitated. Parts of her body had been so badly burned that they were melted to the bone. She was, according to a report at The National, skinned.
Somehow, I just don't think "the west" is responsible for this or for the other atrocities in Syria.
