Today, the Boston Globe online noted:
To say it's a great time to be a Boston sports fan is an understatement of historic proportions. Since the Red Sox lost Game 4 of the ALCS on Oct. 16, the Sox, Patriots, and Celtics (sorry Bruins) have combined for an otherworldly 45-3 record.
I've lived in Boston for more than 23 years, but the one Boston sporting team I adore has had a tough road of it for quite a while. Now, they're kicking butt and taking names.

The Red Sox? Bah. An American League team, and who cares? Blah, blah. Designated hitter. Blah, blah. Red Sox nation. I'm a Cardinals fan, infected by an old boyfriend in graduate school at Southern Illinois University.

The Bruins? Ptooie. Hockey is a meaningless fight on ice.

The Patriots? Double bah! I've loathed them since the Victor Kiam days when the old guard couldn't figure out that there were real, live sports reporters who also happened to be women...and who should be treated with some respect. I'm a Cleveland Browns fan...a sad and lonely (and did I mention cold?) thing to be.

Nope. My Boston team is and always has been the Celtics, and now the boys in green are back at it...leading the division, the conference, and the entire NBA. Yippee skippee! This is the best team standing in decades, and I'm basking in it. :-)

I need to get a little leprechaun to keep at my desk.

I don't follow basketball so much, but I remember back in the day, the Celtics were quite the team. Then all you ever heard about was the Bulls or the Lakers.

BTW, it's probably even more lonely (albeit not too cold) being a Dolphins fan, although now with Parcells running things, who knows (that dude seriously gets around).

Um.

Yeah, Victor Kiam was loathesome. And he owned the team for not quite four years, almost twenty years ago--and wound up being forced to sell because he was so hated. They were in danger of being run out of the state, and the NFL didn't want to lose the Boston media market.

That's why the interim regime immediately following Kiam was all about being nice and likable--with winning games an optional extra.

Kraft buying the team was the end result of the hunt for a local owner who would strive for both good behavior and good football. Which, with relatively few missteps, Kraft has done. Hating the Patriots now for what Kiam did when he owned the team for not quite four years almost twenty years ago, is just strange.

Which is not to say you shouldn't be a Browns fan. No one who has been a Red Sox fan for the last several decades should ever dispute anyone else's preferred flavor of masochism!

No, that's just sports.

I hate the Indianapolis Colts, too, because they moved out of Baltimore (in the dead of the night), leaving Baltimore football-less. Then Art Fucking Modell (yes, that's his middle name -- if you're from Cleveland) moved the Cleveland Browns out of Cleveland...but couldn't take the name with him. (Nyah, nyah.) This happy band of traitors (and felons) became the Baltimore Cravens. And I shall hate them forever, too.

Oh -- and I hate Bill Bellicose Belichik because he cut Bernie Kosar as the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. So when everyone says, "He's the best coach that ever lived," I reply, "He's a jackass. Also a shitheel. I hate him."

So, there ya go.

I don't hold many personal grudges. But I hold (and nurture) sports grudges forever.

I agree with you about Kosar. I was a huge of his because we were contemporaries at Miami - I got to watch him play his 3 seasons (he was redshirted his first season because that was Jim Kelly's last season at Miami).
