The beauty of a winter morning
Jan. 20th, 2011 09:16 amYesterday, it reached 40°F for a while, and then began to rain, a kind of sloppy drizzle that turned into light rain and lingered until 6 p.m. or so. And then it snowed. And then the temperature took a nose dive.
The result was that trees and bushes had finally been denuded of the lingering remains of last week's 19+" of snow, then freshly encrusted.
So this morning, all of the trees and shrubs are delicately frosted. Snow outlines the twigs and pine needles, and the early morning sun illuminates them in a color that is a bit like silver and a bit like gold - and entirely magical.
This is not a heavy, tree-killing coating. What layers our trees is, instead, the sort of gentle faery-land look that steals into the mind and convinces you that, just beyond the corner of your eye, there are kindly snow queens, wrapped in ermine, with sleighs pulled by regal, shaggy white Percherons.
Perhaps I'll see them when I head for work.
