Reports out of NASA this week, following the landing of the STS-119 Shuttle Discovery, indicate that biological material which is believed to be extra-terrestrial in nature was found attached to the interior hatch of the shuttle bay door.

The material was apparently collected and is being tested. A press conference is expected later this afternoon.

The folks at Improv Everywhere have used their creativity and friends to give a group of kids the Best [Little League] Game Ever and a small band the Best Gig Ever.

Now, they offer the Best Funeral Ever. I would have been appalled, but the date of posting made me feel ever so much better.

It's tough because we just don't know whether a BBC story about a bomb that blew the butt off of Lenin's statute is legitimate or a function of the date.

After all, it was the BBC that brought the world the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest.

Not my fault. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day has lovely accompanying text to describe The Human Extended Analog Device 9000.

Very nice.

According to CNN, the Justice Department has asked a federal court to set aside the guilty verdict in the corruption case of former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens. CNN reports,
"I am grateful that the new team of responsible prosecutors at the Department of Justice has acknowledged that I did not receive a fair trial, and has dismissed all the charges against me," he said in a written statement.

"I am also grateful that Judge Emmet G. Sullivan made rulings that facilitated the exposure of the government's misconduct during the last two years. I always knew that there would be a day when the cloud that surrounded me would be removed. That day has finally come."
As I recall, the DoJ for the previous two years was under the control of ex-Senator Stevens' political party.

In my lifetime, 11 women have made their marks on the White House as First Ladies. [For me, there have really only been 10 -- I don't remember Mamie Eisenhower, except historically; she stopped being First Lady, after all, when I was 3.5 years old.] The First Lady of the United States is in an unique position. As Lady Bird Johnson said, "The first lady is, and always has been, an unpaid public servant elected by one person, her husband."

The women who have been First Ladies in the last 50 years have been a mixed grouping of the traditional, the brave, the strong, the driven, the sensible, the smart, the handsome, and the wise. Most of them have been many of these things.

Here is my take on the six that have made the biggest impressions on me... )
