We understand that our students will lack knowledge in our field -- that's what we're supposed to be helping them with.

But students might want to be aware that we talk to each other. And by "we talk to each other," I mean faculty and staff and administrators in the university may well know each other. We've worked together for a long time.

So, for the students: "And we talk about you."

In your working day, are there times when you pop open a browser and visit some of your favorite web sites? If so, you are likely to be a more productive employee than is someone who never takes a side trip to Boston.com or BoingBoing.net.

That's the conclusion of a University of Melbourne study, which found that "those who surfed for less than 20 percent of their time at the office were more productive than those who don't by nine percent, but such productivity increases didn't apply to the Internet-addicted."

I hate these really taxing days (like today) when I don't even get to read my email until I get home at night, much less see if someone's put the face of Jesus as found in Jello up for sale on eBay. It makes me so much less productive.

I'm watching the Colbert Report right now (last night's show, 'cuz we can't usually stay up late enough to see it fresh except on Fridays), and I'm surfing along, doing my daily rounds of various interesting sites...and what do I see?

A plaintive message from Phil Plait of Bad Astronomy blog, noting that Stephen Colbert (who seems to love astronomy and astronomers) hasn't tagged him, yet.

So I'm thinking (since Phil Plait is a pretty cool blogger and all) that what is needed is a vast internet conspiracy campaign to get Colbert's attention and get Phil on his show.

Do please feel free to pass the word. Oh, and take a look at Bad Astronomy blog, which I quite enjoy. If you believe in the value of science, rationalism, and wit, you might like it, too.
