What we would not have seen 40 years ago (besides the black president, of course): women in all of the military bands, color guards, and marching groups. Women astronauts. Women mounted police officers. Women of all colors and ages.

Yeah. Like that. Living in the future's a fine, fine thing.

(Edit: And the Lesbian and Gay Band just walked past the viewing area. Woot!)

On a similar note, I'm ashamed to say that I had to look up what the reference to Seneca Falls meant.

Well, it's not really a guy thing. :-)

We drive past Seneca Falls every year en route to Ohio. In the summer, I try to stop...make my pilgrimage to suffrage, and all that it means to me, my sisters, my mother, my nieces that those women fought so hard.

Lucy Stone is one of my great heroes - born here, studied at Oberlin College (a scant 15 miles from where I grew up), and one of the most influential women in the suffrage movement.

When I vote, I think of her.

It may not be a guy thing as such, but I should still know it!

On the other hand, ElderSon knew exactly what it referenced as soon as he heard it. (On the gripping hand, he had no idea why Selma or Stonewall)

For all its faults, it is an amazing time we live in. (BTW, a friend said that he thought the dressage group in the parade was a nod to Mitt Romney :-> )
