CNN Online is reporting the scuttlebutt that Rudy Giuliani will drop out of the Republican primary race, endorsing McCain on his way out. (The New York Times endorsement of McCain...coupled with the scathing things it said about native son Giuliana...can't have helped.)

Well, at least Rudy contributed a lot to the Florida economy before he dropped out, not to mention making Pat Robertson lose credibility with his base. (He'd already lost it with the rest of us some time ago, of course.)

I don't think Giuliani was counting on a NYTimes endorsement. And I suspect one wouldn't have done him much good with Republicans likely to participate in primaries and caucuses.

It makes sense -- with several of the Super Tuesday primaries winner-take-all on the Republican side, withdrawing now lets his endorsement have potentially considerable significance.

I just wish he'd thrown his support to Romney. I think McCain will be much harder to defeat (for either Barack or Hillary).

McCain and Giuliani represent the extreme pro-war side of the Republican party, so the endorsement isn't a surprise. Romney is such a well-known liar that endorsing him is a bad career move.

Yeah, but... I could live with McCain, should he win the presidency. I won't vote for him, but I could tolerate him.

But President Romney troubles me even more than Governor Romney did (and I really didn't enjoy Governor Romney).

So, all in all, I'd rather the candidates for both parties be the ones at the top of my list.

I don't know about you, but I have visions of Mitt Romney keeping his promise to do for America what he did for Massachusetts: Travel to other places and speak to audiences, making us the butt of all his jokes. And drop in on his office from time to time to do some political posturing, and push whatever polices he thinks will look best to that larger audience, with a total disregard for whether it actually addresses any need of the country in any way.

McCain would at least try to do the job.

Yes, exactly. Romney was an absentee governor. We'll have had 8 years of a president who is out to lunch...we don't need another 4.

I wholeheartedly agree. Joe Biden's best line ever was about Ruuuuudddddeeee: "There's only three things he mentions in a sentence -- a noun, a verb, and 9/11."
